20 POINT SAFETY INSPECTION

IN ACCORDANCE WITH:

Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulatons 851 For Industrial Establishments

Clause 51. -

(1) a lifting device shall, 
(a) be thoroughly examined by a competent person to determine its capability of handling the maximum load as rated, 
(i) prior to being used for the first time, and
(ii) thereafter as often as necessary but not less frequently than recommended by the manufacturer and in any case, at least once a year, and a permanent record shall be kept, signed by the competent person doing the examination.

Forklift Safety Inspection
Listed below are areas of inspection for material handling equipment (ie: forklift) in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act - Clause 51

Visual Inspection:

Forks:

Class rating, lock pins, fork bars, welds, wear allowance 

Carriage:

Bars, chains, bearings, welds, load-back-rest 

Mast:

Bearings, trunnions, crosshead bars, welds 

Lift Cylinders:

Leaks, lines, anchors, drift 

Tilt Cylinders:

Leaks, hosing, tilt range, drift 

Frame:

Welds, alignment, data (load rate) plate 

Counterweight:

Mounting

Overhead Guard:

Screening, welds, anchors 

Cab:

Welds, anchors, guarding

Tires and Wheels:

Tread, rims, sidewalls

Attachments:

Capacity, leaks, welds, derating 

L.P.G. System:

Regulation hoses, mountings, tank brackets

Tests:

Hydraulics:

Lifting speeds, controls, limit switches, safety valving operation

Brakes:

Operation, stopping distance, pedal travel

Emergency Brake:

Cable operation, switch operation holding ability 

Electrical:

Horn, lights, microswitches, warning systems, direction controls

Engine and Fuel:

Exhaust emissions, mountings leaks, relief valve

Steering:

Operation, alignment, mounting

Batteries:

Cleanliess, mounting, covers 

Inspection based on an outward visual inspection and test drive. Teardown and repairs may be necessary to meet safety requirements in accordance with O.H.S.A. (55).
